Two Down...Two More to Go.
Well, I've gotten through two more busy weekends and, thankfully, am not as exhausted as I thought I was going to be. In recap....
Last weekend, Mike and I drove up to Ventura to visit my brother and his wife. After spending three hours in crummy traffic, we finally arrived in Ventura (normally a one hour drive from our apartment). Amanda and Erich had rented an electric boat for the afternoon, so we rushed off almost immediately to putt around Channel Harbor with the speed demon (it went about 5 mph). It was nice to be on the water, keeping cool with snacks and chit-chat. We had initially planned on going to Ventura to visit them and get out of the North Hollywood heat, but Ventura was just as icky-- 93 and a whole lotta huma-ditty. We came back to their place and then took off again for dinner- a lovely local place called Cafe Fiore. Yummy italian food- we splurged and had salads, drinks, entrees and desserts. Nice to do that on the rare occasion. We rounded off the evening by seeing M. Night's new film Lady in the Water. As much as people are panning this film, I saw a lot of merit to it. It was a nice story, and the acting by Paul Giammatti was brilliant. I still think he's so underrated as an actor. His nuance, timing, and facial expressions are perfect.
Sunday, we took a good walk on the beach with them and their doggie Daisy. She's a mini dachsund and SO adorable. Anytime we kicked up sand from walking, she'd jump ahead of us trying to eat it. She did this all the way down the beach- it drove her wild and her little body bent back and forth in a strange sausage bounce. We visited my Grandpa next who was terribly hot in the weather but otherwise seemed to be doing ok. He's been getting out a bit and walking which is good too. After stopping for some late lunch, we headed on the road home. It was nice to be able to have a few hours before bedtime to relax- watched a little Deadwood and did NOT think about all the cleaning/laundry we'd have to do the coming week.
So, yeah, with my parents coming to visit Thursday, we needed to clean. And it's not just the "Oh, there's people coming over, let's tidy up" kinda cleaning. No, we could have done that easy-peasy. When it's parents, you've got to go over everything with a fine tooth comb. Because, inevitably, they will see something in your apartment, some miniscule thing you've overlooked and think, "My GOD! I've raised a chimpanzee for a daughter!" So, trying to bar this from happening, I tore through our place (which needed a deep cleaning of this type anyways) organizing closets, cleaning out cabinets, laundering rugs, etc. After all this work, my mom, upon immediate arrival, not 30 seconds in the door, cries, "Oh my! What ARE those spots on the carpet?" There were a few new spots right at the front entry Mike and I had completely overlooked in the cleaning binge. We knew of their existence, had planned on doing something about them, and then it slipped our minds. And it's the one thing my mom saw immediately. How in the HECK do parents DO that??!! It's a sixth sense, I swear.
Aside from that moment I shoulda seen coming, we all had a really nice weekend overall. My company was hosting a summer party that Thursday evening which they attended. I think they enjoyed meeting my bosses and exchanging some witty banter back and forth. Friday, I had to work, but that night we met up and went out for Cuban food at Versailles. Yummy as always. Saturday morning we had tickets for the recently re-opened Getty Villa in Malibu. If you haven't seen it yet and you're in the area, you should see it as soon as you can. It's stunning. The new architecture surrounding the villa, the refurbishment they did to it, the artwork-- it's all absolutely mesmerizing. It was on the cooler side that day although still muggy, but just getting a chance to experience the peacefulness over there was great. We stopped for a late lunch at Cafe Crepe which is newish on the Promenade in Santa Monica. It's small so we had to wait a bit for a seat, but the food was oh so delish. We walked around a bit and stopped at Hennessey and Ingalls, the greatest bookstore EVER. My dad officially stated that if he were ever to open a bookstore, this would be it. That's high praise coming from a lifelong bilbiophile. We headed back to the valley and had a late dinner at Taste Chicago after some napping. My parents gave the Maxwell Street polish a big thumbs up, as I knew they would. I think we may have waddled home sometime after that. Sunday was pretty casual- had breakfast at Porto's and then came back to the apartment to work on organizing my parent's pictures from their recent cruise through Europe. Unfortunately they had a major crash on their computer and lost a bunch of photos, but did have some on random cds. So I pieced together what they had and organized it. What I did see of the trip looked pretty remarkable, but my mom was pretty sad that they hand't been able to save more. Hopefully, they'll be able to get some pictures from the friends they made on the boat. Mom and Dad left in the afternoon for Ventura, and Mike and I took a refreshing walk before making dinner and calling it a day. A good weekend all in all...
Next up: My cousin's birthday in Irvine this weekend, and a full week of Mike's sister and boyfriend staying with us after that. We'll be busy again soon enough!
