To those Harry Potter fans out there I may have offended over the years:
I am sorry. So sorry.
I know that I have politely scoffed and rolled my eyes at Potter fans since Ms. Rowling began churning her books out. These fans may not have seen it, but deep in my heart I felt my skepticism burn. What was the deal with these adoring fans? I mean, they're children's books for goodness sakes, and some of these fans are my adult friends. I just couldn't get past it.
When the first book came out, I remember trying to get into it and just giving up after a few chapters. It felt very juvenile to me, and it completely boggled my mind how obsessive adults were over this series. When the movies started coming out, I DID see those, because I enjoy a good fantasy, and I think the films really played to a wide audience. Every year I've gotten excited when the new Potter film comes out.
And more and more my friends scoffed at ME for not reading the books, but liking the movies so much. So yes, I finally caught up with the rest of the world. Mike had the entire series, so when we moved in together I figured, ok fine, I'll give it another go and not have to shell out any cash to do so. We'll see how great these books are...
So flash forward almost a year and here we are. I have read them all, and just a couple of weekends ago finished the last Harry Potter book that came out (Half Blood Prince). I am now dying to read the final in the series. I won't give anything away, but there's a point in Half-Blood Prince where someone dies. I didn't sigh and get misty like I've done on some books that are a good read but don't really touch me all that much. No. In this last book, I was bawling. For about an hour. Mike came into the bedroom, took one look at me, and left me to my sobbing.
So yes, victory is yours J.K. Rowling. You've taken down a bibliophile, and a mild book snob. Bravo. And please keep writing. I need to know what happens!!
